Going Grey Was the Best Decision I Ever Made—Here’s Why

Let me start by saying—going grey isn’t for everyone.

For me, the journey started much earlier than I ever expected. I was around 16 or 17 when I spotted my first grey strands. At the time, I had thick, dark brown—almost black—hair that would naturally pick up warm, brownish highlights in the summer sun. So, while my hair had never been a solid color, grey was definitely not a shade I was ready for.

Like most teenagers, I wasn’t about to let white hairs take over my look. So, I did what many of us do—I plucked them out, pretending they didn’t exist, and went about my life.

By the time I was 18, I decided to start professionally highlighting my hair. It wasn’t intentional at first—I just wanted a change. But as it turned out, those highlights were the perfect disguise. I didn’t even notice the greys for years because the lighter strands blended them away. I kept up with my coloring routine, convinced that grey hair wasn’t something I had to think about yet.

Fast forward to my mid-30s, and reality hit me. Suddenly, the greys were everywhere. Not just hiding underneath or sprinkled at my temples—but right there, front and center, impossible to ignore. You might be wondering—how did I not notice before?

Well, honestly, I think the constant cycle of dyeing my hair kept them camouflaged. But now, they weren’t just peeking through; they were demanding attention.

The Moment Everything Changed

The last time I colored my hair was January 15, 2025. I remember that day so clearly, not because I walked out of the salon feeling fabulous, but because something inside me shifted.

Last time I highlighted by hair -

I had just spent seven long hours in the salon chair, going through the same exhausting routine of highlighting and toning my hair. And to make matters worse, ever since moving from Delaware to Florida, the cost of my hair appointments had nearly tripled. The first time I got the price, I almost fell off the chair—it was a shock, to say the least. But even then, I told myself, This is just what I have to do.

But that January day, something felt different.

As I left the salon, I had this overwhelming feeling of being trapped—like I was in a prison of my own making. A prison where I was constantly counting down the days until my roots would betray me. And sure enough, three weeks later, there it was—my entire front hairline sparkling with silver strands. The exact thing I had spent hours and hundreds of dollars covering up had already made its comeback.

I woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and just said it out loud:

“I can’t keep being a slave to this.”

It wasn’t just about the money (though spending hundreds of dollars every few weeks was insane). It was about the mental exhaustion of living by a hair dye calendar, the frustration of feeling like I didn’t look “put together” between appointments, and the constant pressure of keeping up with something that was never going to stop.

Finding My People

So, on a whim, I started researching how to transition to grey hair. I had no idea where to begin, but one night, I found myself deep in the TikTok grey hair community—and suddenly, everything clicked.

One stunning, silver-haired woman after another appeared on my screen, sharing their journey, their struggles, their triumphs. One grey hair more beautiful than the next. I felt like I had just discovered my people—women who had gone through exactly what I was feeling. Every video I watched felt like a mirror reflecting my own thoughts back at me. The hesitation, the fear, the excitement, the freedom—I saw myself in all of it.

It was an epiphany.

That’s when I knew—I wasn’t fighting grey hair all these years because I hated the color. Deep down, I had been fighting the idea of what grey hair represented to me. And that realization changed everything.

A Plan for the Transition

Since my hair had been highlighted blonde for years, I knew the first step in my grey hair journey was toning it down so the transition wouldn’t be so stark. That meant heading back to the salon (ironic, I know). But this time, I wasn’t going in for another round of highlights—I was going in to start my transition.

Luckily, I have an amazing hairstylist who didn’t try to talk me out of it. Instead, he embraced my decision and walked me through exactly what we needed to do to avoid a harsh demarcation line as my natural color grew in. He created a plan, step by step, to help me blend my existing hair into my new, natural shade. And for the first time, instead of dreading the salon visit, I felt validated.

It was like I had always known I was meant to be on this journey—but until that moment, I hadn’t been ready to accept it.

Letting Go & Moving Forward

The moment I decided to stop coloring my hair, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders—but I also felt the weight of years spent trying to keep up with an impossible standard.

For so long, I convinced myself that dyeing my hair was just part of my routine, something I had to do. But when I finally took a step back, I saw the truth:

I was exhausted.

✅ Exhausted from spending hours trapped in a salon chair.
✅ Exhausted from scheduling my life around my next root touch-up.
✅ Exhausted from feeling like I didn’t look “put together” when my greys started showing.
✅ Exhausted from shelling out hundreds of dollars every few weeks just to keep up with an illusion.
✅ Exhausted from hiding.

Because at the end of the day, I wasn’t just covering my grey hair—I was covering a part of me that I wasn’t ready to embrace. I was holding onto an idea of beauty that no longer fit the person I was becoming.

That realization hit me hard. But instead of fear, I felt free.

For the first time in years, I wasn’t chasing an image—I was stepping into one that felt authentic. I was no longer a prisoner to salon appointments, hair dye schedules, or the pressure to maintain something that was never meant to last.

Now, as I watch my natural silver come through, I don’t feel regret—I feel empowered.

This isn’t about “letting myself go.” It’s about finally letting myself be.

And I have a feeling this is just the beginning. And I’m going to love it.
