Have you ever had one of those burning moments of inspiration that just needed to be released?
That’s exactly what happened to me two years ago during a routine morning school drop-off.
What I didn’t know then was how a simple five-minute recording at a red light would become the mirror reflecting my entire journey of transformation.
The Unexpected Power of Self Discovery
“Sometimes when you have inspiration and you have this burning feeling inside of you, you just want to express how you’re feeling. You want to talk to somebody about your feelings, but not everybody is available right there and then.”
It started as an ordinary day. I had just dropped my kids at school, running errands like any other morning. But there was this deep, inexplicable feeling burning inside me. Instead of letting it pass, I followed my intuition. When I stopped at a red light, I propped my phone on the dashboard, hit record and just… talked.
Fast forward two years later, I was looking for another video when I stumbled upon this forgotten recording.
What happened next was nothing short of transformative.
The Journey of Self-Discovery
Phase 1: Awakening
The awakening phase isn’t just about recognizing the need for change – it’s about acknowledging the patterns that have held us back for years.
For me, this phase was raw, uncomfortable, and absolutely necessary.
I struggled with my inner self for so long, doubted my own personal feelings, but worked so hard to get to know me, to protect myself, protect my inner peace, protect my emotions
Breaking Through the Noise
The first step was identifying those persistent negative thoughts that had become so familiar, they felt like truth:
- The whispers of “you’re not enough”
- The limiting beliefs that kept me playing small
- The self-doubt that made me question every decision
- The constant need for external validation
The Turning Point
What many don’t realize about awakening is that it often comes in quiet moments.
For me, it wasn’t a dramatic epiphany but rather a gentle understanding that something needed to change. I realized that while I was authentic in my roles as a mother and partner, I hadn’t yet discovered what authenticity meant for me, just me.
The First Steps
The first steps I took I learned that:
- Self-discovery isn’t linear
- Doubts are normal but shouldn’t be in control
- Past conditioning needed to be questioned
- Every small step matters
As children, we have learned to doubt ourselves in many steps of our childhood and that grows with us into adulthood, although we do know better, it’s always there in the back of our minds.
The Reality Check
The awakening isn’t just about recognizing what needs to change – it’s about being brave enough to face it.
It’s about understanding that while we might know better as adults, those childhood patterns don’t disappear without conscious effort.
Phase 2: Exploration
During this transformative phase, I discovered something profound about myself that changed everything – I discovered that I’m an ambivert.
This wasn’t just a personality label; it was a key that unlocked my understanding of my entire being.
Understanding My Ambivert Nature
Being an ambivert means you can be an extrovert and an introvert at the same time – but you need to feed your own energy.
Discovering and understanding that I have an ambivert personality helped me:
- Listening to my body and understanding my environment
- Understand why I needed both social interaction and solitude
- Accept my changing energy levels in different situations
- Stop judging myself for needing to withdraw from overstimulating environments
- Honor my need for quiet time without feeling guilty
Once I understood a little bit more about who I was, I immersed myself in various practices:
Physical Connection
- Daily yoga practice became my way of listening to my body
- Found deep personal connection through movement
- Used physical practice as a form of meditation in motion
Mental Exploration
- Regular meditation sessions
- Quiet time for self-reflection
- Learning to sit with my thoughts without judgment
- Reading positive and inspiring books to understand me better
- Accepting me for who I was
Professional Guidance
The path to self-discovery often requires outside perspective, but it doesn’t always come in the form we expect.
I’ve done on-and-off therapy for quite a while. I will say I have not found one therapist per se, that it was 100% that I knew that person was going to help me change or see differently. But all the therapists that I had in the past, I learned something about myself.
This reveals an important truth about professional guidance – it’s not about finding one perfect mentor or therapist who has all the answers. Instead, it’s about gathering wisdom from various sources, learning different approaches to handling situations, and taking what resonates with you.
Each professional interaction becomes a piece of the larger puzzle, contributing to your overall growth and understanding of yourself.
The Learning Journey
This journey isn’t just about internal work – it’s about knowing how to feed my inner energy and my mind with empowering messages and understanding:
- Learning to distinguish between authentic desires and conditioned responses
- Journaling and self-reflection exercises
- Immersing myself in self-development books
- Listening to motivational podcasts
Finding My Energy Sources
One of the things that was very important to me is finding out what gave me energy, what gave me motivation, what was it that I truly liked about myself and that I liked doing.
Understanding your energy sources isn’t just about identifying what makes you feel good – it’s about discovering what truly resonates with your authentic self.
For me, this meant recognizing my ambivert nature and understanding that sometimes social settings energized me, while other times they left me completely overstimulated
It’s about honoring both sides of yourself: the part that thrives in social connection and the part that needs solitude to recharge. This discovery process involves careful attention to how different activities and environments affect your energy levels, and then having the courage to honor those needs without apology.
The Weeding Process
I also had to weed out what I did not like about myself, what it was that I did for so many years that I was doing it to please other people, and not necessarily for me.
The weeding process isn’t just about identifying negative patterns – it’s about having the courage to examine which parts of your personality are truly yours and which are learned behaviors adopted to please others.
This process requires brutal honesty with yourself and the willingness to let go of habits, beliefs, and behaviors that no longer serve your authentic self. It’s about understanding that authenticity isn’t just about who you are, but also about acknowledging who you’re not.
Phase 3: Integration
This is where everything came together – where the work of self-discovery transforms into a lived experience. This phase isn’t just about understanding; it’s about embodying your truth.
The Magic of Integration
Everything that I was working for, everything I was working towards – my emotional well-being, my mental well-being, self-love all came down into this one recording.
The coming together of all the years of inner work was magical and it all made sense. The integration manifests through:
- Recognizing your growth in unexpected moments
- Seeing patterns transform naturally
- Living authentically without forced effort
- Finding peace in your choices
The Cumulative Effect
Going through my 20s, I was a certain way going through my 30s, I was a certain way now in my 40s, it’s almost like a cumulative of all the stuff that I’ve learned and that I’ve applied, that now I am seeing that everything came together.
The cumulative effect came together so unexpectedly and at the time I was not looking or digging to find it – it just showed up as:
- Natural confidence in decision-making
- Intuitive boundary-setting
- Effortless self-advocacy
- Peaceful self-acceptance
True Authenticity Emerges
There’s a profound difference between showing up authentically for others and being truly authentic with yourself.
You can be yourself in a sense with everybody else, but when you are true to yourself inside, it’s a whole different perspective. It’s a whole different kind of viewing.
While we might excel at being authentic in our roles – as parents, partners, or professionals – true authenticity emerges when we discover who we are beneath all these titles.
It’s about understanding that authenticity isn’t just about “take it or leave it” attitudes, but rather a deep, intentional journey of self-reflection that encompasses both who we are and who we’re not
This emergence happens when we stop performing authenticity and start embodying it, creating a magical moment where our inner truth aligns perfectly with our outer expression.
The Breakthrough Moment
“It felt so genuine. It felt so true to who I really am, to who I’ve worked so hard to become, to accept, to change. To let go of everything that I was taught in the past”
That five-minute recording became more than just a diary entry – it was tangible proof of my transformation. The breakthrough wasn’t just in recording the message, but in rediscovering it years later and realizing how far I’d come.
It was a moment of pure recognition, where past and present collided to show me the depth of my growth. What made it especially powerful was hearing myself express a level of self-love and acceptance that I had never received from anyone else
Beyond Self-Doubt
Moving beyond self-doubt isn’t about eliminating it completely – it’s about changing your relationship with it.
Although we do know better, it’s always there in the back of our minds. It’s always there. Like, are you sure? Maybe not, aww well, maybe. And you always have to work on it”
What’s remarkable is how this journey transforms doubt from a roadblock into a gentle reminder of our humanity.
The key isn’t to silence the doubtful voice entirely but to acknowledge it without letting it control your decisions. This shift happens gradually, through consistent self-work and building trust in your inner wisdom.
When you reach this stage, doubt becomes less of an obstacle and more of a checkpoint – a moment to pause, reflect, and then move forward with confidence in your choices.
The Continuous Journey
I’m still a work in progress, and I will be for the rest of my life. But what I’ve learned is every little bit that you do today, every little bit that you do every day, adds up to the bigger picture at the end of the day”
This journey isn’t about reaching a final destination – it’s about embracing the continuous evolution of self. There were moments of feeling defeated and times when instant gratification seemed tempting, but these challenges were actually catalysts for change.
The beauty lies in understanding that growth happens even when we can’t see immediate results. Like pieces of a puzzle slowly coming together, each experience, each small step, contributes to our larger transformation.
Whether in our 20s, 30s, or 40s, each decade brings new insights, new challenges, and new growth opportunities.
This is where the magic happens. It’s when all the pieces start coming together, and you begin to see the bigger picture of who you are becoming.
But Let’s Talk About Those Hard Days…
But let’s be real for a moment.
There were days when I questioned everything. Days when I wondered if I was capable of loving myself the way I loved others.
The journey to self love and self-discovery isn’t always Instagram-worthy moments of meditation and enlightenment.
Sometimes it’s sitting with uncomfortable truths and choosing to stay committed anyway. Facing the dark days is what will get you thru to see the light on the other side.
What Nobody Tells You The Truth About Self-Love
The truth is, self-love and self-discovery aren’t a destination – it’s a daily practice.
It’s choosing yourself over and over again, every single day even when it feels selfish. It’s understanding that authentic self-love doesn’t feel selfish at all; it feels peaceful and genuine.
The Real Truth About Inner Work
Inner work isn’t a straight path to enlightenment – it’s a messy, beautiful journey of self-discovery.
I have been doing so much inner work for the last few years, specifically the last five years, I’ve really dug deep into inner work, my inner work, discover who I was, what I wanted, what my vision was, aside from being anything else to anybody other than just being me.
The truth is, inner work often means facing parts of yourself you’ve been avoiding, diving into past experiences you’d rather forget, and challenging beliefs you’ve held for years.
It’s about those moments when you want to quit because facing reality becomes too uncomfortable, yet choosing to continue anyway.
The real work happens in the quiet moments of self-reflection, in the courage to keep going when results aren’t immediate, and in the willingness to heal your inner child while building a stronger adult self.
Every little bit that you do today, every little bit that you do every day, adds up to the bigger picture at the end of the day.
When you focus on doing your inner work don’t just rely on the positive affirmations and meditation apps – focus on:
- Facing your past without flinching
- Healing your inner child
- Accepting all parts of yourself
- Understanding that growth is ongoing
When You Feel Like Giving Up (But Shouldn’t)
There will be times when progress feels slow or non-existent. Remember this: transformation isn’t always visible at the moment.
Just like my forgotten video showed me two years later, sometimes we don’t realize how far we’ve come until we look back.

The Power of Video Journaling
Recording yourself might feel awkward at first, but it’s an incredibly powerful tool for self-discovery.
Video journaling isn’t just about recording thoughts; it’s about capturing raw, unfiltered moments of truth that become time capsules of transformation.
When you feel that burning sensation, that deep feeling that needs expression, pressing record can become a powerful act of self-love.
The beauty lies in the authenticity of the moment – you’re not performing for anyone else; you’re simply allowing your truth to flow freely.
Press that record button you are not going to regret two years later what you said, regardless of what it is. Because when you feel that fire – that feeling inside is so strong, you’re going to put out who you truly are and you can learn from that.
Here are a few tips I can give you to be your true authentic self when you decide to do a video recording:
- Choose a moment when you are alone and you can fully dedicate it to yourself
- Speak from your heart without editing
- Save the recordings without watching them immediately
- Revisit them after some time has passed
The power of self-discovery is about creating a dialogue with your future self, leaving breadcrumbs of wisdom that you might need to rediscover later.
Mental Health & Self-Love Connection
“You can’t just be authentic to people around you, to your kids, to your job, but not be your true authentic self within.”
The journey to self-love is intrinsically connected to mental health and it requires:
- Daily commitment to self-care practices
- Acceptance of both strengths and weaknesses
- Recognition of growth and progress
- Permission to be imperfect
Final Thoughts
Your journey to self-discovery is uniquely yours. That burning feeling inside you? That’s your inner wisdom asking to be heard. Don’t ignore it. Whether it’s through video journaling, meditation, therapy, or simply taking five minutes at a red light to speak your truth – every step counts.
Remember, self-discovery isn’t about reaching a destination; it’s about embracing the journey of becoming. And sometimes, the most profound revelations come from the most unexpected moments – like a forgotten five-minute video that shows you just how far you’ve come.
